Planting and feeding instructions for your Mangosteen tree
Step 1 It takes a few weeks to prepare the ground before planting. Keep your potted tree in a shaded area indoors and water (half cup) twice weekly. It's better the soil is not too moist or over-watered.
Step 2 To prepare for planting dig a hole 2' X 2' X 2' and fill with organic matter, topsoil and compost. Let it weather for two to four weeks and (optionally) turn the mixture adding 1/2 lb. of chicken pellets.
Step 3 Your tree needs partial shading for the next 2-3 years. Purchase 50% shade cloth and tent your tree creating an A-Frame of shade cloth. Or plant a shade producer next to your tree to be removed later.
Step 4 Plant your tree at the end of the day or on a cloudy afternoon and water immediately. Spread mulch or grass cuttings around it to retain moisture. Be sure not to leave any near the trunk of the tree.
Step 5 Your tree needs good drainage so water every few days once it is planted but never too much at once. It's good to sprinkle a half pound of chicken pellets or manure around the tree after planting it.
Step 6 Feeding your tree is important. Suggested fertilizers include: KMAG, 16-16-16 Special, 14-14-14, 12-24-12 or 10-12-24. Feed every 3 months (1/2 lb. in 1st year, 1 lb. in 2-4 years, 2 lbs. in 5+ years)..
